Kermit V. Lipez

Judge Lipez was appointed to the First Circuit Court of Appeals in April 1998 and assumed senior status on December 31, 2011. He graduated from Haverford College in 1963 and Yale Law School in 1967. He earned his LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990. Judge Lipez participated in the U.S. Department of Justice Honors Program as a Staff Attorney in the Civil Rights Division from 1967 to 1968. He then served as Special Assistant and Legal Counsel to Maine Governor Kenneth M. Curtis from 1968 to 1971 and as a Legislative Aide for United States Senator Edmund S. Muskie from 1971 to 1972. Judge Lipez worked in private practice in Portland, Maine from 1973 to 1985, before he was appointed Justice of the Maine Superior Court, where he served from 1985 to 1994.
