Sandra L. Lynch

Judge Lynch was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in March 1995 and assumed senior status on December 31, 2022. She served as Chief Judge from 2008 to 2015. Judge Lynch graduated from Wellesley College in 1968 and Boston University School of Law in 1971. She served as law clerk to Judge Raymond Pettine of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island from 1971 to 1973. After her clerkship, she served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1973 to 1974, while she also taught at Boston University School of Law. She then joined the Massachusetts Department of Education as General Counsel from 1974 to 1978. In 1978, she entered private practice, where she worked until joining the bench in 1995.
